Snoezelen - Replenishing The Spirit

The staff at the Porcupine Regional School, (PRS), is working to establish a Snoezelen Room for their students. Establishing the room is the dream of Mrs. Jennifer Davis who cares deeply about the disabled children at PRS. To date, proposals for the design as well as the location of the room have been fully developed. The next step is fund raising.

Snoezelen Rooms are designed to appeal to the senses. Children with disabilities, or other limiting conditions, enjoy gentle stimulation of the five senses. It is safe and non-threatening. The room contains fascinating visual displays that surround and absorb. Colorful objects beckon to be touched. Gentle vibrations and massage soothe the child’s body and reduce stress while at the same time the air is filled with delicious aromas and pleasant sounds.

The children experience a feeling of self-control, independent discovery and exploration. These achievements help disabled children overcome inhibitions while enhancing their self-esteem and reducing physical tension. It is a place that replenishes the spirit.

Research has shown that multi-sensory environments offer a wealth of benefits, often affording the child and caregiver an opportunity to improve communications, enhance their understanding of each other and build trust in their relationship.

Fundraising for this worthwhile endeavor will begin with the Bed Racing competitions at the South Porcupine Winter Carnival.
