School History:
Coronation Public School was opened in 1952, the year of Queen Elizabeth's coronation. 2002 is also our Jubilee Year. The school was originally designed to be a K-6 school, with seven classrooms, and a multi-purpose gym/auditorium. Times change and the needs of the community changed.
In 1985, the Timmins Board of Education reorganized the school boundaries and transferred all Junior and Senior Kindergarten students to Coronation. This helped toward stabilized enrollments in all of the schools in the town of Timmins, and allowed us to create a unique setting that focused only on the needs and interests of young children. The program provided was a half day program. Later the board expanded the SK program to be full day, every day and the JK program became full day, every other day. Both were offered as French Immersion programs as well as in English. At that point, the French Immersion Senior Kindergarten classes were moved to Flora MacDonald and Queen Elizabeth schools.
In 2001, Junior Kindergarten became a full-day, every day program. The English senior kindergarten students were moved into the new additions that had been built on to Pinecrest and W.E. Miller schools, leaving Coronation with only Junior Kindergarten students.
Over the years, fund-raising projects have allowed us to build a playground that is designed for younger students. We co-ordinate with Northern College to allow Education Assistant students, Paramedic Students to work with our teachers and children and we work closely with a variety of community agencies to meet the needs of many children with special needs. We have created a Nutrition program that the Community Living clients assist in with our weekly Muffin Project and provide a low-cost milk program.
