Federal Public School

Located within the 'Federal' subdivision of Kirkland Lake, Federal Public School offers an English language program for students in grades JK to grade 6. With its strong emphasis on literacy and numeracy, Federal PS strives to offer a range of programs and services for its children. Children at Federal PS receive a minimum of 100 minutes per day of language instruction and 60 minutes per day of math instruction. Character education and healthy lifestyles are further promoted with monthly character education foci and the implementation of a balanced day schedule. As part of the balanced day, students are taught about healthy eating choices. A daily breakfast program is also offered at no cost to our children.

Our playground at Federal PS has seen a lot of changes over the past 4 years. We now have a dedicated primary playground as well as a junior playground. Each play area has a new play structure. New trees and grass have been planted in the primary yard, while a new soccer field and swings have been installed in the junior yard. It is encouraging to see so many children making regular use of our beautiful playground. The Parent Teacher Association has been very supportive of these improvements. Our PTA mission is to work in partnership with school staff and community to provide quality programs for children in order to help meet physical, social, emotional, and nutritional requirements for all students.

School History:

The current Federal Public School celebrated its official opening on December 13th, 1977. Joe Yakubowski, then director for the Kirkland Lake Board of Education, spoke about how different groups were able to come together to plan a successful blending of open concept classrooms with traditional closed classroom formats. This blend of classroom formats continues to exist at Federal PS, providing students unique opportunities to work together as a school community. Federal PS Grade 6 student, Ian Hill was chosen to cut the ribbon on behalf of the Minister of Education. Ian later took on an important role in another school opening as he was the chief architect of the new Kirkland Lake District Composite School.

On December 13th, 2007, Federal Public School celebrated its 30th anniversary with a gala event. Former staff and students visited the school to hear guest speakers as well as school choir performances. Pictures from each of the school's 30 years lined the halls as guests mingled and visited their former classrooms. The theme for this celebration centered on Federal's proud past and bright future in Kirkland Lake.
